Spring is certainly in the air. The daffodils are flowering along with other colourful spring bulbs. Our big oak trees have the signs of spring with new leaves appearing.
Life at Wharekaka has been busy as usual. Wendy has lots of interesting activities for residents to join in.
Thank you to Joyce Hogg and family for the donation of a pool table for the dayroom. I am sure that we will have plenty of competition between residents and staff during the coming months.
Arbor House is planning a visit to Wharekaka in September to join our residents for a game of bowls and afternoon tea, then we are off to Carter Court for a quiz afternoon.
Suzie our regular piano player is coming in on Sunday 8th September at 4pm. All welcome to attend for a gold coin donation.
Friday 13th we have Lance Naysmith coming to entertain. Lance is always a popular visitor to Wharekaka. Maybe Wendy has a special treat for the day – being spooky Friday!!!
On 20th September we have loud shirt day. This is a fundraising event for deaf NZ Children. All welcome to attend morning tea, wearing your brightest shirt and bringing along a gold coin donation to go toward deaf NZ children – a very worthy cause.
Everyone enjoyed the visit arranged by the Auxiliary. The glass blowing was fascinating together with the colourful birds that had been made.
Wharekaka welcome Karen as a volunteer to the home. Karen comes in during the week to spend time with residents going for a walk or just having a chat with them.
If you are interested in being a volunteer at Wharekaka please do not hesitate to call in and have a chat with Wendy.
Another concert will be given by Vicki Jones and David Binning at Wharekaka on Sunday 15th September at 3.30pm, all welcome gold coin donation appreciated.
The wise old Owl (told by our newest resident Miriam Gullium-Scott0
A wise old owl sat is a oak
The more she saw the less she spoke
the less she spoke the more she heard
Don’t you wish you were that wise old bird
Until next month enjoy the warmer weather and longer days.
The Wharekaka Auxiliary held their annual major fundraising event at Brackenridge on Monday 2 September. This is the highly popular Bridge, Mahjong and for the first time, Scrabble Day. This year, a record number of tables have been taken. Many thanks to all our local supporters who come to play, to Brackenridge for their support and to the numerous people who are so generous with products, refreshments and their time. We could not be so successful without your support.
The next event to look forward to will be the opening of the new dining room. The Auxiliary will be organising an open afternoon for the community. More in the next Star.
As always, the Auxiliary welcome anyone who would be interested in helping with their activities at Wharekaka. Please contact Helen Meehan on 306 9074 or Anne Parkinson on 306 8105 if you are interested.
