Martinborough School has just begun the Fonterra Milk for Schools programme, which makes milk available daily to all Year 1-6 pupils. Principal Craig Nelson says that it turns out to be quite a complex business. Fonterra have donated a fridge as well as the cartons of milk and group of older children called the Health Squad have the responsibility of chilling milk for the day, then taking it to classrooms at designated times.
Craig says that he was instructed on “how to drink milk”, which includes the best times from a digestive point of view. The cartons and straws are carefully folded using a specific method and put into big blue bins to be taken away for recycling. Destined for recycling in Thailand, the cartons will eventually become books and roofing tiles. It’s all a far cry from the 1950s metal crates, glass bottles and cardboard lids.
