Golf Club News

Aug 2013

What a change the weather makes; most players at the club have all got smiles on their faces and whether they win or lose it is still great to see.

Numbers have been very good at the club lately – even the Grumpy’s have kept their numbers up with an average of 20 to 30 playing every week and the humour over a glass of water at the end of play is brilliant. Terry Blacktop is keeping a tally on the jug count and I heard there was none one week and he wasn’t too pleased about that.

Ladies, I thank you most sincerely for the results left for me each week. The 9 holers are doing an excellent job in retaining numbers and even the 18 holers have maintained their numbers with a few new names now entering the competitions.
Thursday Club just keeps on getting bigger and bigger every week. Nothing much has been said about the boys’ trip to Aussie, in fact it has been very “hush-hush”.

A good month for visitors to the Club too; 44 Wairarapa vets recently enjoyed the club’s hospitality not to mention a group from NZ Rail who were such a hard-case crew and had more prizes to dish out than lotto.
Two notable holes in one over the month – club captain Ro Griffiths fluked one on the 16th hole on Sunday 28th and the other was quite remarkable on the par 4, 11th hole at Otaki by Lawrence Nicholls, son-in-law of Gary Cuttance.
Bruce and Bev Hancox caught up with Brian Moisley, the club’s patron in Auckland recently and informed me that he was in good health. He no longer plays golf but for some time now has been into indoor bowls and sends his regards to all club members.

Doug Ferguson and Michael Hatrick are a couple of hard-case Grumpys; the latter is an absolute comedian and plays all his golf in shorts, no matter how cold it is. It is good to see David Kershaw, one the club’s major sponsors out and about golfing again and Trevor Hawkins still has a sore arm; me thinks it is sore because of all the stirring he does!
The course will be closed on Sunday, 11th August for the annual Lefties/Righties Tournament; entries have been good so far and club champs will soon be underway.
