MARTINBOROUGH GOLF CLUB

Jun 2013

By Kevin Campbell
Congratulations to Walter Barber, Caleb and Reece Everson, George Wilkins and Piri Wihone who won the Junior Pennants Inter-club final last Sunday at Wainuiomata by 12 points. It is a very special trophy for the club as it is the first time entered. There are a few people to thank namely Peter Wilkins the driver for the boys and Gary McDowall at the Pukemanu for allowing the boys to use the courtesy van for transport and Bill Jones who has given so much time and effort in preparing the boys for each round.

Another first class effort from 9 holer Pat Wood, who has been selected to represent the club in the Sue Bunt Trophy final. Good luck Pat.

To the club scene and I can’t believe the efforts of the Grumpy’s. You don’t have to be good to win a prize and thankfully Terry Blacktop has no qualms about who gets the money either. The numbers have remained the same and the competition very fierce at times and always good banter afterwards.

The ladies 9 holers are a happy lot; Honor Clark is doing a great job and there is always room for more to join.

Adele Cairns has at long last shown her true mettle and has performed really well during the last couple of weeks. The girls have had some success playing on different courses in the pennants and Ladies Club Captain Lyle Griffiths is very pleased with their efforts so far. Friday 6 June is their Open Day so the course will be closed for that day.

The Thursday club is going from strength to strength and numbers are always consistent. The same old names appear regularly like Roger Parkinson, Trevor Hawkins, Malcolm Wood and even Rick Hargreaves got a mention. Colin Whibley-Smith continues to play well at the moment. The guys from Ngawi love putting on an act and Bill Jago has proved this with nearest the pin and plenty of two’s. Ali Holmes is in the same mould and puts in a good round now and then. One Thursday I saw the biggest shank of my life – Ash Reed on the 8th hole; teed off and the ball was found behind the green keeper’s shed, not in front.

Sunday 23 June is the member’s only mid-winter Ambrose tournament, so please make an effort to keep this date free. Also coming up at Carterton on Sunday 7 July is the 36-hole Men’s Open Foursomes.  Sunday 11 August is the Lefties/Righties 36-hole Open which is a major tournament for the club mainly because I am a ‘leftie’.
Good Golfing & Good Luck
