The Health Centre was opened in January 2008 and is thriving. At present the Centre is staffed by two doctors, three nurses, etc. The practice keeps growing. The business is sound.
The Ruamahunga Health Trust, with tremendous community support, raised the funds and built the Centre in Oxford Street to ensure the Martinborough Community was able to receive high quality health services. Doctor shortages necessitated that the Community build a centre which is owned by the community through the Ruamahunga Health Trust. The centre is leased to the Doctor’s practice.
Since the building was opened the Trust has had to provide more storage space and created a closed corridor on the Oxford Street side. As well the largest room bordering Oxford Street has been divided into two consulting rooms by a special glass partition. More storage space is required and the consulting rooms are almost 100% utilised.
To keep up with needs the Trust, with help from Lions, has purchased a mole probe and recently an ultra sound system which enables the Doctor to examine blood vessels, and internal organs and check on pregnancies. A new cardiac probe has been purchased to further its value. The doctor has been in training this year to become proficient at using the ultrasound scanner and is also training with Tim Matthews at Masterton Hospital.
Because the Health Centre is offering a far wider range of services to the community than we had six years ago the Trust has begun examining whether it is possible find ways to expand and find more room.
The Trust values the community support and would like to encourage everyone to make suggestions on how we can improve services as well as giving us ideas about health initiatives we might pursue. Our address remains the same – PO Box 216, Martinborough 5741.
Diane Phelps had to resign from the Trust several years ago and recently Sue Sullivan, who has given faithful service has resigned. The Trust would welcome two new trustees. If you are willing please forward your name to the Secretary, Ruamahunga Health Trust at the above address.
Trustees: Ro Griffiths( chair), Terry Blacktop (secretary), Liz Hancock, David Lawrence, Gary Jackson, Honor Clark.
