ENVIRO SQUAD

May 2013

On Monday the Enviro Squad Leaders from Steam Team went out to the Cape Palliser to harvest the kumara. We met two scientists named Mike and Tony.

They talked about the kumara not being fertilised or watered and about how they kept track of the rainfall and temperature.

We also looked at the old rock walls where people used to plant rows of kumara. The we got down to the messy stuff. We loosened the dirt with a garden fork and then dug with our hands to see what was underneath.

We found kumara of all shapes and sizes. It was just like opening presents – you never knew what was going to be inside.
