The total fire ban for all of the South Wairarapa remains in effect which prohibits all outdoor fires including BBQ’s (other than gas fired). Since the last report, the Martinborough Brigade responded to one CPR assist call and two vegetation fires. Neither fires were permitted and could have been quite serious. Please call 111 if any smoke is seen as early warning is vital during this record drought.
The Martinborough Volunteer Fire Brigade is pleased to announce the appointment of Bill Butzbach as the Deputy Chief Fire Officer. Having moved to town 3 years ago, Bill has 37 years in the fire service beginning as a volunteer in Kawerau in 1976, then joining the career (paid) staff in 1981. He advanced to the highest levels and served as acting Chief Executive/National Commander.
Most of his experience is at the regional level as commander for Arapawa (greater Wellington and top of the south island), Bay of Plenty/Waikato and Northland prior to that. Importantly for the Martinborough Brigade, he has been Chief Fire Officer for Gisborne and Rotorua. Having been right in the action at many significant incidents, including National Coordinator for the Christchurch Earthquake response, Bill is a great addition to our Brigade.
Leaving his career staff position in November last year to pursue other business interests, he is currently working for NZ Police in the Information and Communications Technology area. Bill commutes to Wellington most days but makes sure to have time to work on his car restoration, DIY building projects and music. Bill and fiancé Katherine Monks have 5 children ranging in age from twelve to 31.
Asked for advice to anyone considering joining a fire brigade, “As with any activity you generally get out what you put in. Being a NZFS volunteer always rewards beyond expectations.”
