The weekend of 29-30 June in Martinborough will be all about olives, with the inaugural Martinborough Olive Harvest Festival.
“Initiated by the Martinborough Business Association, the festival seeks to promote the region’s excellent olive oils by creating a bright spot at a generally quiet time in Martinborough,” said Event Manager Sue McLeary.
“Olives are a winter crop, so the festival celebrates the cold. Activities will include a series of olive-themed lunches, picking olives and joining the harvest through to tasting virginal oil, culinary workshops and a fun Night Market in Martinborough’s famous Square.
“Many locals have a few olive trees they don’t do much with. Please let us know on olivefestival@martinboroughnz.com if you would like us to organise a picking crew for you. If there is enough interest we are looking at creating special ‘festival oil’ from the non-commercial trees,” she commented.
More festival details will be announced soon.
