The long hot summer may be cause for concern for our farming community but it does have its upside from a lifestyle point of view. This weather is much more reminiscent of the Wairarapa summers of old when the ground was described as looking like a dog biscuit and the cicadas were deafening when you drove down off the Rimutakas.
The great days are certainly attracting people to our district and figures supplied by Destination Wairarapa show that we are more than holding our own in these difficult times. Hats off to all those who organise the great events we have seen here in recent times and also to David and his team in Destination Wairarapa for the fantastic job the do in promoting us to New Zealand and the world.
They work closely with Positively Wellington Tourism and Hawkes Bay to lure the tourists to ‘our place’ and their focussed enthusiasm is working well for us.
If you own a business here please consider joining Destination Wairarapa as the more members they have, the more they can do on our behalf. Even those not directly involved in the hospitality industry will see benefit when the district prospers.
Finally South Wairarapa District Council would like to say farewell and thank you to our CEO Dr Jack Dowds. Dr Dowds has been employed by SWDC for nearly five years decided not to renew his contract with us. His final day is 5 May but due to accrued leave he actually left the office on 20 February. We’ll miss Jack’s sense of humour and wish him well for the future.
