Although the membership of the Martinborough Womens Institute is only twelve it never ceases to amaze the efforts put into their meetings. The previous meeting was a mini flower show among members which Mr Mate Higginson, as always, happy to oblige by judging.
However this year was a bit of a mix up with the sales table steward ladies selling items which were meant to go next day to Masterton. A poem written by one of the members follows this report.
Owing to the weather conditions many members were absent when a member recalled a visit to Libya and showed photos of the war cemeteries. At El Alemein in Egypt where a number of Martinborough men are buried and the Knightsbridge British Commonwealth cemetery at Tobruk. Also a cemetery in Florence.
Members were treated to ice cream, jaffas and popcorn as they watched a DVD of the Marigold Hotel. As it was the Institute’s birthday a birthday cake as also on hand. The Martinborough Institute was founded in 1928.
The afternoon ended all to quickly, but everyone have the final meeting in December to look forward to.
Two delegates attended the Wairarapa Federation half yearly Council Meeting at Wainuioru to which twelve institutes send delegates along with visiting federations.
The theme was Country and Western with all delegates dressing up. There was a speaker fro the Riversdale Children’s Camp, Line Dancing and items by the local school.

Flower Show with a Flair
Martinborough W.I. meet the spring
With September’s Flower Show in full swing
There since noon Betty, Nolene and daisy
Have been working like crazy
Three daffodils to read
One single, one double, one multiple head
Three pansies in a saucer, one camellia in a cap
One Freesia, polyanthus, rhodendron , all that
One miniature, two different shrubs or trees
Mate is there to judge all these
Winnings were collected and checked
Ere batty had time to select
When told exhibits had been sold by mistake
Benevolent buyers thought it was great
