A concern
Your article entitled “Along Came a Spider” was interesting for me to read. My son, an adult, but innocent, has just returned from a trip to NZ to see relatives. I was shocked to hear about his experience at a B&B in the Martinborough area, where the owner chatted to him in the supermarket, and then invited him to stay at her B&B on the Southern Coast. Once he was there, she claimed that she had no food in the house to eat and he, unbelievably naive, took her back to Martinborough where she ran up a bill of $200 worth of groceries for him to pay. All of this was accompanied by lashings of verbal abuse about men in general. Surely a person like this should be deregistered?
Yours sincerely,
A concerned Ozzie parent

The regulations
There are no regulations for Homestays offering less than accommodation for twelve people. Anybody is free to nail up a sign on their house and is in business. The Council only has the power to investigate reports of hygiene problems.
Maybe there is a case for local Homestay operators to set up a self regulating group among themselves to ensure the standard of our accommodation?
