Whether you are a home gardener, life style block owner, or just looking for a career in horticulture, the horticulture Programme run through Open Polytechnic will help you achieve your goals.
A free twelve month part-time programme provides the basic knowledge to those keen on growing successful plants. Courses offer a good mix of theory and practice, leading to the National Certificate in Horticulture Level 3.
By joining the programme, students reap the benefit of a fantastic combination of distance learning with the assistance of a dedicated and experienced training facilitator, who will provide regular support, workshops and tutorials to make the information more relevant to students.
The programme covers plant botany, propagation, soils, amenity horticulture, weed control, along with the safe use of horticultural chemicals. Field-trips, weekly tutorials and monthly workshops are ideal for fitting in with work and family commitments.
Tutor Mary Beckett, a former Weltec lecturer and a professional horticulturalist, offers a wide range of skills and knowledge to students through regular face to face contact, e-mails and phone.
Enrolments for the October 2012 intake are open now and will close by 17 October. There are no minimum qualifications for enrolment for students age 20 and up, and the courses are fully government subsidised so there is no cost to students.
