We are very fortunate at the club to have had a great influx of green fee players with several groups having played during the past month. Rex Moller brought several of his cobber’s from all over the country to play recently and 40 players from Royal Wellington visited last Monday and were very impressed with the state of the greens. They didn’t believe the club only had one and a half green keepers whereas they have between 12 and 15 to look after their course.
The Grumpies are recruiting new members; they had an input from a very young Matt Thomas last week. Seriously Matt, you must have looked out of place amongst the oldies! Jugs are heading towards 50 – man it will be some bash!
The ladies finally got some play in last week after being so unlucky with the weather. Club Captain Kris and Mariana played for the Wairarapa team on the 19th at Shandon and were responsible for the team’s upset win over Paraparaumu/Judgeford; they won 5-4.
The Marquis Shield team was not last but pretty close to it so bad luck guys and we all appreciate the effort you put into it and there is always next year.
Thursday club is still going strong and 35 golfers are about the norm these days. Ash Reed, Bill Jones, Garth Gadsby and even Trevor Hawkins have been headline hunters in the past month. Malcolm Wood has now settled in Martinborough and is playing great and Patrick Pedlow has been in great form as well.
The juniors, I don’t know how they do it but they are getting more and more confident every time they step up to the tee. Caleb and Reece Everson, George Wilkins, Walter Barber and Reuben Crook have been in the money over the last month. I am picking the Jacobson boys, Ryan and Trent will be in the winners circle along with Piri Wihone in the not too distant future.
My member of the month is Murdie Hancox, 91 years young and still enjoying good health. Murdie has been Club Captain, President, an Eagle and a Life Member of the club and in 1985 he won the club’s Intermediate champion title. Murdie is also a very keen card player and still plays Rummy at the rest home even now. He always liked to come to the club rooms to have a game of cards. Thank you Murdie, for your input to the club and I know you always volunteered for a lot of what was going on which benefited the club.
On a final note – there is intense satisfaction in knowing you look like a golfer: the proper wardrobe, the state of the art weaponry, the glasses, the glove….. it’s an illusion that lasts all the way to the first tee!
Good Golfing & Good Luck
