GOLF CLUB NEWS

Mar 2012

First an apology and a big thank you to Peter Hudson and his wife for their efforts in organising the Neil Smith Tournament. It was Peter who thought of the yellow balls and the handsome trophy. He also arranged for Mary to come down and present the trophy. Thanks again Peter.

Barbara Smith who has been an absolute pillar of the club and has been Ladies Club Champion twice has given up after 56 years at the Club. Well done Barbara we wish you well in your retirement with husband Bob, another pillar of the Club.

Good news for the Club, Philippa Kirk and Frazer Smith from Carterton won the Nett competition at the Wellington Mixed Foursomes on Saturday 18th at Royal Wellington. This is a remarkable effort as there were some gun golfers playing, including Club Captain Kris and Rick Gerrand.

The Grumpies are still going strong and it is to be noted that a very good left hander blitzed the field on Tuesday 21st and he was 10 up on Par – you beast Ray. The Grumpies jugs are improving – they are now up to 10 – up from 3 last month. Keep it up boys I might join you just for the jug count.

Thursday Club continues on its merry way with numbers still up. Bit of a talking point still about the girls getting 4 extra shots but those are the rules apparently.
Opening Day was a ripper. It was certainly different to others I have been involved with. It was a great turnout. The BBQ and entertainment following the golf was excellent. Thanks to Ray Matthews, Lachie McLeod and Tracey Barrett. The event was a Vegas Ambrose draw.

The Ladies Interclub is underway and the Club had a good win in the opening round. Good luck to the Marquis Shield Team for the upcoming year.
There was some good news for the Club where 12 members travelled to the Rangitiri Golf Club way up in the middle of the Island. Shayne and Poppy Hammond from Dry River Wines, plus Ian Stewart were runners up. That is a great result and well done to all.

We wish Jason van Zanten well at Massey and for his new club at Tawhero. We will miss him. Still we have some good juniors coming on and I am sure Trent and Ryan Jacobson will get there. Plus little George Wilkins, who is well on the way – but we could always do with some more. Ring the Club for further information.

Ryan Fox, son of the All Black great Grant won the Pro Am from 37 other professionals. It was a ripper of a day and special thanks go to Pain & Kershaw and Scotty’s Meat for their involvement and participation. Also to Jimmy Napier for organising and running a great tournament. The winners for the Amateurs were Malneek Plumbing/Master Trade Team with Bill the Builders team runner up.

Good golfing
