COUNCILLORS COMMENTS

Feb 2012

So far we are having meetings to progress the Long Term Plan and have met with Business, Sporting and Amenity & Rural stakeholders to get their points of view. A draft proposal and public consultation will be done in May.
In the meantime I would really like to hear from you regarding your ideas on the Martinborough Town Hall proposals. Submissions need to be in by 17 February to Council and this is a topic that deserves to be robustly discussed as we are indeed looking well into the future for the ways our community want to use the building.
Everyone agrees we need something

as a Town Hall but as whatever is decided is going to be financed through a Council loan, fundraising and ultimately all ratepayers a strong lead on what the public want to go with will be helpful. Get out those pens and send us your thoughts – flyers in the Rate demand and available at Council and the Libraries. This affects everyone town and country, Featherston, Greytown and Martinborough as we will all be paying.
It is really great to be told that the Pool is being well used and that families are enjoying the facility this summer.

Summer Ramblings!
Well one thing I won’t be discussing is this blasted summer weather. While the glass still growing and farmers have never known a year like it, the togs stay in the bottom drawer.
Town Hall: I urge people to send in submissions regarding the Town Hall, a submission form was sent out with the February rate demand. However the form isn’t necessary for a submission just put your thoughts to paper or an email. Put Martinborough Town hall submission on top to ensure there’s no confusion. (Submissions close 14th February) The submission forms have gone out to all SWDC rate payers; it would be very disappointing to have a poor showing from the Martinborough community. Please if you have a view put a submission in. Thank You.
Waste Water: This is the most pressing issue facing Council, all 3 towns waste water discharge consents in our district are in the process of being assess or reapplied for with the Wellington Regional Council. Council is meeting with various stakeholders/interest parties in an attempt to get general agreement with treatment options and time lines to assist with the process. Council officers are looking at the possibility of using the Pain Farm to discharge the Martinborough treated waste water using centre pivot irrigation. The treated water would only be irrigated in summer months when conditions allowed. I have some reservations about the use of Pain Farm and will have to have scientific evidence regarding sustainability of the operation and guarantee that future income stream will not be effected. Council has a number of legal conditions to meet, at least two involving public participation, it’s not a done deal.
Wairarapa Combined Services: The three Councils continue to work together to look at options of joint service delivery and the sharing of services. Masterton, Carterton and SWDC Councils will share the cost of a study to look into the assessment of options for joint management and service delivery for the Wairarapa, the study should be available in May.
LTP: The Long Term Plan is in the making every three years Council looks strategically into the next 10 years and further for many of our infra structural assets. Once again we to go out to the community and we invite the community to us, at the end of the day it’s all up to you to take an interest or not. Submissions and your attendance to meetings is always welcome.
Don’t forget Town Hall Submission, let’s hope summer is in the making!. Max Stevens
