Hi everyone – a bit of a hiccup last month (apologies – Mike) but on to October and it was a very busy month for the club. We had the AB Martin Open Mixed foursomes – a very good field took part and the winners were Helen Kirk and Martin Napier with a very impressive Nett 64. Some of the locals who played well were Bruce and Cathy Ward, Ailsa Griffiths and Terry Blacktop and youngsters Amy Austin and Reuben Crook. George and Philippa Kirk shared sixth place with Lyle and Ro Griffiths.
The Murray Halberg Day for the Eagles Society was held on Sunday 16th. It was a day not to be forgotten as ties were presented to three new club Eagles – Terry Blacktop, Graham Howie and Bill Jones; congratulations to you three. The Eagles Society does such a great job with the money raised.
The Grumpy’s just can’t help themselves; after 17 weeks into their new season 27 jugs have been either “won’ or “lost”.
The Thursday club is getting bigger and bigger – some of the older players weren’t too happy with the school holidays. I can recall George Wilkins had 46 points one Thursday and also a special mention to Bill Jones who at aged 78 actually shot a 77 one Thursday, one shot under his age.
I don’t think I can recall the course looking so good; after the rain we have had and the coring of the greens it is a treat – well done to green keeper Darren.
All the finals have been played – congratulations to all winners commiserations to the losers, both men and women.
Under Bill Jones the juniors have been going from strength to strength and what a talented and lovely bunch of boys – very polite, courteous and a pleasure to play golf with.
Nominations are up on the board for the committee for next year – we wish all candidates good luck.
Club Captain Kris was playing in a women’s competition at Royal Wellington Golf Club recently when one of her shots ended up in a small stream that runs through the course. She thought she could play it which she did and did it so well. The ball came out perfectly but unfortunately for Kris in her admiration of her shot, her trundler went into the stream – all of her clubs, her wallet and other personal items that women carry got completely saturated. But she carried on and ended the round in good shape and in the prize list.
Phil Eberlein who caddied for Bob Goodley in the Intermediate Final recently has written a song about the win; he is so clever and believe me it is really clever.
Talking of Bob Goodley – Clare came home after work one day to find Bob swatting flies. “How many have you got?” Clare asked. “Five” says Bob, “three male and two female.” Clare was astounded. “How can you tell?” she asked. Bob’s reply “There were three on the beer can and two on the phone!”
My player of the month would have to be Jason van Zanten; he has had a stellar year. He won the under 19’s tournament in Wellington recently and followed that up by winning the club champs. He is now studying for his exams so good luck Jason. You have been so lucky to have your father Rob to help and always be by your side.
Good Golfing & Good Luck
